Smoking weed in Amsterdam's red light district will now be punished, although this will not affect the lives of sex workers
On Thursday, May 25, the ban on marijuana consumption in the
Netherlands went into effect on the streets of Amsterdam's red light district, part of efforts by the city's first female mayor to clean up the area.
The district known for its brothels, window
erotic jobs, sex clubs and marijuana cafes, has put up signs that attract millions of tourists each year but are a nuisance for the residents.
Femke Halsema, the mayor of the city, previously promised to improve the conditions of sexworkers, to curb crime and excessive drug and alcohol consumption.
Talks are already underway to remove sex,
adultworks and drug tourism from the city center, but residents of the proposed alternative sites are opposed to this.

risks a fine of 100 euros.
However, the night before the ban began, business owners were assembling anxiously on the streets, cursing resident activists and showing concern that tourists would stop coming.
The soul of the neighbourhood, what makes it so extraordinary, is slowly being pulled out,
said Jim Zielinski, a spokesperson for the Bulldog local coffee shop.
He is of the opinion that the solution lies in intensifying the enforcement of current regulations prohibiting public alcohol consumption and illicit drug transactions, this way
adult work should not be affected in such a negative manner.
The policy triggered opposing reactions in some individuals. A person who occasionally smokes joints remarked,
It almost makes one want to sit on one’s front step smoking cannabis in public.
